SHAPED APERTURES

shaped apertures is a multi-functional performance and art display space designed using an intense participatory design process with gotham professional arts academy in prospect heights. the space was designed though the co-design studio at pratt institute, an interdisciplinary group of students, with my role as the sole industrial designer.

CO-DESIGN PROCESS

our design process focused on a

participatory framework, where gotham students and staff collaborated with us throughout every step of the process from ideation to completion.

the project was completed through three main phases: community visioning, co-creation, and public review. we used verbal, visual, and tactical methods to empower students and staff to envision the new space, using tools such as sticky notes, mood boarding, and modelmaking, which all allow for various ways the students could express their ideas.

the project was finalized and presented in may of 2023, and is expected to be fabricated and installed for gotham’s 2023 fall semester.

MODULAR STAGE

with the students at gotham, we designed stage modules that can be connected to each other both horiztonally and vertically to be used multifunctionally as a performance stage, art display stand, seating, and book storage.

the components are cut using cnc milling and are assembled without using hardware, allowing for easy repair and adaptability.

ART DISPLAY PANELS

the panels are able to be used in the space for art display, room partitions, and stage framing.

they feature imbedded foam panels for sound dampening, and various attachments that allow for varying degress of visibility.

also assembled with little to no hardware, its simplicity allows for displayed artwork to shine.

the final product was made with cabinet-grade birch plywood, and rubber sheeting, allowing for affordable replacement if needed.

the elements' modularity allows for flexible programming, seating, gathering arrangements, and art display.
